Newborn Tips

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy!

Being a new mom can be quite overwhelming for some! Here are some tips to help you get through the early days with your newborn baby:

  • Rest as much as you can and take care of yourself: Sleep and rest is crucial for new moms. Try to sleep when your baby sleeps. Eat healthy food, drink plenty of water, and make time for yourself when you can. Your baby needs you, so taking care of yourself is important too! Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your family or friends!
  • Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding can be challenging at first, but don’t give up. Get help from a lactation consultant, if needed, and remember to drink plenty of water and eat healthy food.  Breastfeeding will make you feel thirsty so get into the habit of taking a glass of water with you to each feed.
  • Nappies (or Diapers): Newborns need to be changed often, so make sure you have plenty of nappies, wipes (preferably alcohol and perfume free) and bum cream on hand. Make sure to change your baby’s nappy before and if necessary, after feeds to prevent a nappy rash.
  • Wrapping or Swaddling: Wrapping can help calm baby and improve sleep. Learn how to wrap your baby properly, and make sure baby does not overheat.
  • Bathing: Newborns don’t need to be put into a bath every day. Sponge baths are recommended until the stub of umbilical cord falls off. Make sure the room is warm and all you need is within reach.
  • Baby’s safety: Make sure your baby is always safe. Avoid putting anything in the bassinet or crib with your baby. Make sure babies are always placed on their back for sleep. Don’t leave baby unattended on counters and high surfaces. Always use a car seat when traveling and place baby’s seat on the back seat of the car.

Finally, remember that it is okay to make mistakes.  Every baby is different! Just trust in your instincts and don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice from other moms or healthcare professionals.

Enjoy your newborn, cherishing every moment. They grow so quickly.
